Streetwise Novelist and Screenwriter Richard Price

- Author of hard-boiled, often violent books set in New York City, and of numerous screenplays for major Hollywood films (as well as four episodes of HBO’s “The Wire”), Price will discuss his new novel about crime and gentrification on the Lower East Side.

Film: Martin Scorcese’s “The Age of Innocence”

- A sumptuous adaptation of Edith Wharton’s Pulitzer-winning novel of sex and social scandal among New York’s upper classes in the 1870s. Wharton scholar Nancy Lewis will offer commentary. Directed by Martin Scorcese. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Winona Ryder. (U.S., 1993, 139 min., color, 35mm). A scholar of Edith Wharton’s work will discuss the Hollywood adaptation of the classic novel, immediately following a screening of the 1993 film. Nancy Lewis’s husband, the late Wharton biographer RWB Lewis, served as a consultant on Scorcese’s movie.

Women’s Personal Safety and Self Defense
6-10pm, Empire Commons Community Building (uptown)
- The Rape Aggression Defense is a Self-Defense program for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands on defense training. The course culminates with a dynamic simulation. Dynamic Simulation gives the participants the opportunity to use what they have learned in realistic training scenarios against “aggressors” wearing special safety equipment.
