Acts should be under 5 minutes and appropriate for all ages. Other than that, anything goes! Come on, Rockefeller—we know there is a lot of talent lurking out there besides exquisite memo-writing skills and a mastery of supply and demand graphs. Show us what you’ve got! Note: To cover booking costs & other expenses, we are requiring a $3 “application fee” for all performers. Payments will be accepted after ticket sales open on March 10.

If you are enrolled in PAD508 this semester, participation in the Talent Show can qualify as entry in the Moraleware category of the Rocky Awards! Pay attention in class for more information.

    The most influential literary critic of his generation, chief critic at the London “Guardian” at the age of 26, dubbed “The Elegant Assassin” by the “Boston Globe”, will read from his own fiction at 4pm.     Mary Gordon will be named New York State Author (2008-2010) and Jean Valentine will be named New York State Poet (2008-2010).The recipients will read from their work following the ceremony. Bestselling author Mary Gordon, known for work that explores Irish-American family life, single motherhood and Catholic spirituality, is one of America’s most admired prose writers. Jean Valentine, a prizewinning poet, is celebrated for poetry that explores the structure and imagery of dreams. The Writers Institute is mandated by the New York State Governor and Legislature to award the two honors to major authors whose career achievements make them deserving of New York State’s highest literary honors.

Tuesday Policy Lunch—“What Went Wrong in Kenya? Post Election Violence in Context”

    Stephen Orvis studies comparative politics with an emphasis on Africa as a professor of government at Hamilton College. He has been working and studying in Kenya for well over two decades. His articles on rural development in Kenya and African democratization have appeared inAfrican Studies Review, Studies in Comparative International Development, Journal of Asian and African Studies and Africa Today. He is the author of The Agrarian Question in Kenya (University Presses of Florida). He served as an international election observer in Kenya’s transitional elections to democratic rule. Orvis is writing a textbook on comparative politics for Congressional Quarterly Press. He earned a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin- Madison.

Perry Miller Adato, Pioneering Documentary Filmmaker

    The first woman to receive the prestigious Director’s Guild of America Award (which she received a total of 4 times), Perry Miller Adato will discuss the logistical and funding challenges of her new two-part film series, “Paris: The Luminous Years,” about art and culture in the French capital, 1905-1930.

    Perry Miller Adato, major documentary filmmaker, will discuss her landmark 1970 biographical film immediately following the screening. In the 1970s, Adato pioneered widely-imitated documentary filmmaking techniques using old photographs, letters, readings, art objects, songs and newsreel footage. The filmmaker will discuss the landmark documentary immediately following a screening of the film.

Free Yoga Class

    The yoga classes are structured on a drop-in basis and are open to students of all levels. The routine includes breathing technique, warm-ups, energetic standing sequences, seated and lying poses, and deep stretching to develop body awareness, stability, strength, and flexibility. The class finishes with a self massage and deep relaxation leading into a short meditation.

This moving documentary explores this question from the perspective of women in Africa, where this tragedy is witnessed again and again. With an introduction from film director Osvalde Lewat-Hallade.     Iconic hoofer Dianne “Lady Di” Walker is one of the world’s best tap dancers as well as teacher and mentor to top greats like Savion Glover. Walker uses her feet like precision percussion instruments and has said that there’s a straight line from tap to hip hop. For this lively dance/music event Walker gathers together friends from both worlds for an all-out jam session that will rattle the rafters. $20 adults/$15 students/$10 kids/10% discount for members.

Film Screening and Discussion: Southern Comfort

    This award-winning documentary follows the story of Robert Eads, an FTM transsexual suffering from ovarian cancer who faces sure death after 20 doctors have refused to treat him for his condition. Far away from Atlanta’s city lights, Robert makes a life for himself and his two families: his biological family of two parents, two sons by birth, and a darling three-year-old grandson; and his chosen family of two FTM transsexual sons, Maxwell and Cass. Robert is falling in love with Lola Cola, a MTF transsexual, but as hard as he tries to resist, in the face of his impending death, the romance blooms beautifully in bittersweet irony.

Tuesday Policy Lunch—“Do Civil Society Development Programs (Really) Work?”

    Fron Nahzi is vice president for programs at the East-West Management Institute in New York City. He spearheads new initiatives in post-conflict societies for the Institute, a not-for-profit organization that promotes the rule of law, civil society, and free market systems across the globe. He has more than 17 years of international development experience in overseeing, evaluating, and developing projects in the Balkans, Central Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia. Nahzi has extensive experience in developing and implementing civil society and media programs in transitional countries. Nahzi shares his experiences and expertise with the public via the media. Since 1991, he has been a regular contributor to the Institute for War and Peace Reporting and a guest analyst for CNN, BBC, and NPR. His articles have been published in European and American newspapers and journals, includingThe Independent and Newsday.

    The Rape Aggression Defense is a self-defense program for women. R.A.D. is a system of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques.
