PRESENTED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE

<Wednesday, March 12>
University at Albany Hillel Film Series
6:30pm, Spectrum 8 Theater, 290 Delaware Ave., Albany
http://www.ualbanyhillel.org
Explore Jewish Identity in America with these acclaimed films:

March 12
“The Tribe” —18 min., Documentary: What can the most successful doll on
the planet show us about being Jewish today? The Tribe weaves together
archival footage, graphics, animation, Barbie dioramas, and slam poetry to
take audiences on an electric ride through the complex history of both the
Barbie doll and the Jewish people – from Biblical times to present day. By
tracing Barbie’s history, the film sheds light on the questions: What does
it mean to be an American Jew today? What does it mean to be a member of
any tribe in the 21st Century?

Special Guest: Vanessa Hidary, Spoken Word Artist featured in “The Tribe”
Actress/Poet/Playwright/Native New Yorker Vanessa Hidary grew up on
Manhattan’s culturally diverse Upper West Side. Her experiences as a
Sephardic Jew with close friends from different ethnic and religious
backgrounds inspired her to write “Culture Bandit,” a solo show that
chronicles Vanessa’s coming of age during the golden age of Hip-Hop and
her dedication to fostering understanding and friendship between all
people. Her performances have been aired on HBO’s “Russell Simmon’s
Presents Def Poetry.” Vanessa is also a member of the burlesque troupe
“Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad.”

“Matzo & Mistletoe” — 58 min., Documentary: Filmmaker Kate Feiffer was six
years old when her father told her she was Jewish. Since she celebrated
Christmas and never attended synagogue, this information came as a
surprise. In “Matzo & Mistletoe”, Feiffer turns to family, friends, noted
experts and well-known personalities to sort through the complexities and
paradoxes of secular Jewish identity. “Matzo & Mistletoe” features
Feiffer’s parents Jules Feiffer and Judy Feiffer, newscaster Mike Wallace,
Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald, columnist Walter Shapiro, writer Meryl Gordon,
Professor Alan Dershowitz and many others.

March 13
“Naturalized” —8 min., Comedy: An Americanized Russian immigrant battles
his overbearing family for the right to undergo the ultimate rite.   Julia
Kots’ hilarious short won the grand prize at the 2007 New York Jewish
Student Film Festival. Kots emigrated from the former Soviet Union as a
religious refugee at the age of 10. Her dark comedy, New Business, was
awarded the New Line Cinema Development Grant and recently screened at the
2008 Slamdance Film Festival. Her previous short film, “Naturalized”,
played at over 25 film festivals, including the Chicago International Film
Festival.

“Orthodox Stance” — 80 min., Documentary: Dmitriy Salita is a Russian
immigrant, professional boxer and a religious Jew. “Orthodox Stance”
portrays Dmitriy’s maturation in each of these disparate communities, and
the seemingly incompatible cultures and characters working together to
support his rare and remarkable devotion to both Orthodox Judaism and the
pursuit of a professional boxing title. In the end the film is about more
than just boxing and religion, but about a young man’s search for meaning
in life.

This program is a partnership between Arts On The Move and University at
Albany Hillel. This endeavor is supported by UJA Federation of New York.
