Irish Author Anne Enright – Seminar
Location: Assembly Hall, Campus Center (Uptown Campus)
Time: 4:15pm
Summary:
Anne Enright received the 2007 Booker Prize, the British Commonwealth’s most prestigious literary award, for “The Gathering” (2007), a novel about the impact of alcoholism and suicide on a large Irish family. Her newest book is the short story collection, “Yesterday’s Weather” (2008).

Ramazan with Rumi
Location: Assembly Hall, Campus Center (Uptown Campus)
Time: 8:00pm – 9:30pm
Summary:
Celebration of Ramazan Bayramı with a guest speaker from Harvard to talk on Rumi and Sufi performers to read Rumi poetry with nay music. Coffee and Turkish desserts will be served.  Sponsored by the Turkish Student Association.

Movie: Night and the City

Summary:
Exiled American director Jules Dassin, on the run from the House Un-American Activities Committee, made this film about a luckless American expatriate who attempts to establish himself as a wrestling promoter in London, but who quickly finds himself trapped in a nightmare world of crime and murder. The British Film Institute called it, “a baroque masterpiece of corruption, paranoia and doom that ranks among the true works of art in the film noir genre.”

First Run Movie: Get Smart

Summary:
Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 for CONTROL, battles the forces of KAOS with the more-competent Agent 99 at his side.  Comedy.

Souvlaki Fest 2008

Summary:

Tour the USS Slater

Summary: Tour the only World War II destroyer afloat in The United States, moored right by the Port of Albany.  $7 for adults $5 for children. Running Wednesday – Sunday until November.

Novelist Kate Christenson and Valerie Martin – Reading

Kate Christensen received the PEN/Faulkner Award for “The Great Man” (2007), the story of famous artist Oscar Feldman and the two families (one “public,” one “secret”) he leaves behind after his death. Valerie Martin is best known for “Mary Reilly” (1990), a retelling of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” Her newest novel, “Trespass” (2007), presents two young lovers drawn into the unimaginable horrors of ethnic cleansing in the Balkans.

Jim Shepard is renowned for darkly humorous tales, unusual historical settings, and work that explores the peculiar pain of male adolescence. His newest story collection, Like You’d Understand, Anyway (2007), received the 2008 Story Prize and was a finalist for the National Book Award.

Caribbean Development Within the Global Economy

Sir Kenneth O. Hall has served as governor general of Jamaica since 2006. Before his government post, he served as vice president of Academic Affairs at SUNY Westbury (1989-94) and as assistant provost at SUNY admin and SUNY Oswego (1982-89). In 1994 he assumed the position of deputy secretary of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and in 1996 he became the pro vice chancellor and principal of the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies. The governor general’s visit and lecture are sponsored by the University at Albany’s nationally ranked Department of Africana studies.

German Film: Aimee & Jaguar

Movie: Man with a Movie Camera

Summary: This inventive late silent from Soviet Russia exerted a profound impact on the development of film as a storytelling medium. In the manner of Godfrey Reggio’s KOYAANISQATSI (1982), the film abandons plot and language to create a “symphony” of footage that captures the manic rhythms of urban life in Moscow and Odessa. Vertov pioneers a variety of shots and techniques that have since become standard elements of cinematic language. The main feature will be preceded by Vsevolod Pudovkin’s short silent film, CHESS FEVER [SHAKHMATNAYA GORYACHKA] (Soviet Union, 1925, 28 minutes, b/w, DVD).  Silent film with live piano accompaniment

Chowderfest

Summary: The streets are full of contenders, allowing you to sample their entries and giving you the opportunity to help choose the best chowder in the area.  The competition will be judged by a panel of local celebrities.

Irish 2000 Arts and Music Festival
Location: Altamont Fairgrounds

Summary: More than 30 performances from groups like Enter the Haggis, Great Big Sea and Barrage.  Also a Celtic Family Fun Area with games and rides.  $20 admission fee.

Lupe Fiasco

Summary:
Grammy-winning American rapper. He rose to fame in 2006 following the success of his critically acclaimed debut album, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor. Anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga

Summary: 18th century American soldiers set the 1777 scene with tents, campfires, musket and cannon firing.  Discuss strategy with officers, judge a court-martial, browse colonial wares, go on a “reconnaissance” party, learn about open-hearth cooking techniques, or take part in a mock drill.
